A Quick Guide To Search Engines
All of the major search engines (MSN, Yahoo, All The Web etc) work in the same way - they use automated programs called "spiders" or "bots" that constantly surf the internet looking for websites to index. Whenever they come across a link to a site that they've not heard of before (or that they've not looked at for a while) they visit that one as well.
When on your website, a "spider" will take a look around and decide whether or not your site is likely to be of any interest to people. If it is, then it'll read and store every word of your site which will later be added to the database that makes up the search engine.
That's just part of it though. Just because a search engine knows about your site, doesn't mean that it's going to tell anyone else about it. Whenever you search for something on the internet, you want to find what you are looking for quickly and easily without being shown irrelevant sites - it's the job of the search engines to decide which of the sites that it knows about are most likely to be able to provide you with the information, product or service that you are looking for.
Our job is to convince the search engines that your site is worthy of a mention!
